First French Summer Camp?

We often get enquiries from parents who are looking to send their child to their first French Summer Camp and naturally they would like reassurance that their child will be well looked after!

The first question is often about travel. How will they get to the French Summer Camp?

Campers usually arrive by one of two methods: many arrive by plane to Geneva airport where they are met in the arrivals hall by a representative from Alpine French School or our partner transfer company. Our representative will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a board with their name on. In the unusual event that they have any problems finding the representative, we have several emergency numbers in operation so that the problem can be swiftly resolved and they can be guided to their representative quickly. The journey to Morzine takes 1-1.5 hours. Some campers arrive by car to Morzine, their parents or another family member might bring them directly to the Camp, so this is an option for your first French Summer Camp if you would like to come and meet us.

What happens when they arrive at the Camp?

Upon arrival at the camp, campers are met by our activity leaders who will welcome them, show them around the camp, introduce them to other campers and show them their room. Rooms are allocated according to the information given by parents on our pre-arrivel information forms. Campers share a room with others of a similar age and of similar interests, girls together and boys together. There are separate boys and girls corridors. Rooms are shared with a maximum of 5 other campers but usually 1-3. All rooms are ensuite and spacious and there are additional bathroom facilities in the corridors outside of the bedrooms.

Who looks after them?

Our activity leaders live on-site with our campers 24/7. They look after every aspect of their life during their stay with us – like parents would when they are at home! They make sure they are up in time to wash and have breakfast before the say starts, they ensure they are at the lessons and activities on time during the day. Then at the end of the busy day, they make sure that those who want a little quiet time have some time to relax before dinner, however if they want company there are more casual activities arranged so that no-one feels alone if they don’t want to. They eat with the campers and organise the evening activities and then make sure they go to bed in time to get enough sleep for the day ahead! The activity leaders are highly trained and know how to make the campers feel happy and part of the camp, they keep an eye on them to ensure they’re happy and if not, they’ll talk to them to see if there is anything wrong. They are trained in relationships with children of all ages and know how to get the best out of them!

What if they don’t speak very much French?

Some parents worry about the language barrier. Even if the campers arrive at the French Summer Camp with a basic knowledge of French, they’ll soon learn the basics and the daily routines of the camp. Our teachers and activity leaders know how to communicate using simple words, gestures and actions, however they also speak a range of languages in case of any problems or misunderstandings. Safety briefings for activities are always carried out in several languages.

How do you select your staff?

Our activity leaders and teachers are carefully selected and trained. All of them are qualified to work with children and experienced in working at French Summer Camps. They all thrive on ensuring that juniors flourish during their time at the camp, enjoy their time with us, learn new skills and how to live, work and play as part of a team.

What if they are ill?

The activity leaders at our French Summer Camp are all first-aid trained. They live with the campers so are very aware of their day-to-day well-being just as parents are at home. If they suspect any illness of injury, they take the student to the medical centre to get it checked out, which is 100 metres away from the summer camp!

What if they are homesick?

Our camp director does everything they can when they design the Summer Camp programme to make sure that juniors don’t feel homesick. They have the opportunity every day to speak to friends and family. However, if one of them does feel homesick, the leaders will do everything they can to talk to them about it and to make them feel better. Then they will keep a special eye on them to make sure they are ok for the rest of their stay.

What if they don’t make friends at the French Summer Camp?

Our room repartition, lesson and activity grouping are designed to give students every opportunity to meet as many students as possible to enable them to find friends. Campers often make friends with juniors of different ages and nationalities but everyone finds their place :)

What happens if they don’t like the food?

The food at the centre is designed to be French and healthy but for junior tastes. The chef chooses menus that juniors usually like, but in the event that someone doesn’t like one of the meals, an simple alternative will be offered.
