The Alps are a paradise for active individuals with an enormous range of activities on offer all year-round.
- Cross-country skiing
In the winter, combine your French course with skiing or snowboarding, or even cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. Morzine is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area with over 650km of pistes plus endless off-piste possibilities and several snow-parks and half-pipes. We often meet World and Olympic Champions training and having fun in the area which is a testament to its facilities and possibilities! There is a large range of cross-country ski trails amongst the beautiful Alpine lakes and mountains plus beautiful unspoiled areas for snow-shoeing.
- Mountain Biking
In the summer, Morzine offers a huge amount of sporting activities from mountain biking to hiking, paragliding to white-water rafting, pool or open-water swimming to climbing.
The village welcomes the Tour de France every few years and road bikers can test their fitness on the surrounding mountain climbs. Many of the chairlifts and cable-cars open to enable bikers to ride the downhill courses and to offer easy access to the high mountain trails for all mountain bikers and walkers.
Walking trails span the valleys and there is something for everyone. Gentle rambles to admire the view and stop at a mountain refuge to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the view, or mountain climbs for the more active with magnificent views over the Alps from the peaks!
Local rivers and beautiful lakes provide opportunities for water sports such as white-water rafting, kayaking, windsurfing, open-water swimming, canyoning….
If you are a fan of taking to the air, paragliding is a popular sport in the area and the local schools run beginner courses or offer initiation tandem rides.
Climbing enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities in the local area including traditional routes and via ferrata.
If all of the sporting activities explained above sound too active for you, there are many other possibilities to explore the village and surrounding area at a more leisurely pace.
In the winter, the Alpine sun is surprisingly warming so enjoy a hot chocolate or a vin chaud on the terrace of a mountain restaurant at the top of a cable-car with stunning views over the Alps. Or take a gentle wander around one of the Alpine lakes; the area maintains walking trails year-round so you can walk and explore the area. There are spas, shops, bars, cafés and restaurants in addition to activities organised by the local commune, so entertain yourself meandering around Morzine’s pretty village centre. There is also a 25m indoor pool and spa.
The summer climate is surprisingly warm and temperatures in the summer months range from 25-35°C in general. In addition to the indoor pool and spa, Morzine boasts a 50m and children’s outdoor pool complex with sunbathing terraces. Or you can visit one of the beaches at the Alpine lakes. The same as during the winter, there are walking trails and plenty of activities organized in the village itself including a local market which takes place weekly on a Wednesday.
