Teenage French Summer Camp – Diary of a French group.

Karen taught French to one of our Teenage French Summer Camp groups last week.

Karen planned a theme for each day linking to a larger theme for the whole week. Everyday she revised what was learnt the day before so the children don’t forget!

This week the theme was “Des vacances à la montage” (Holidays in the mountains).

This was her schedule for the week:

MONDAY

We started by playing ‘Bingo’. This is a great game to see how the children are with numbers in French and correct any mistakes.

Today’s theme was “Presenting yourself in French”.

We did a speaking activity which involved the children asking questions to find out each others names, ages and where they are from.

Next the children had false passports with another identity and they had to present these identities to the class too. Each person lived somewhere in France, so the children then had to find ‘their’ city on the map. Cities include Lyon, Grenoble and Bordeaux.

We finished off with a rousing game of UNO, perfect for practicing numbers and colours!

TUESDAY

Today’s theme was “Sporting activities in Morzine”.

We learnt about all the activities in the classroom then took a short walk to Les Dereches, the park located in Morzine close to the Swimming Pool. Here we found different sports, such as swimming, ice skating, tennis and the adventure park and spoke about them in French.

Back in the classroom we recorded all we’d seen and talked about the sports we like and don’t like.

Finally we learnt about names of family members and played a fun game of Happy Families!

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday is market day in Morzine, so is the perfect opportunity for the children to practice their French in a real life situation. Of course today’s theme was “Market Day”.

We started by doing interactive crosswords about food. The clues were stuck on the wall with pictures of the items, so the children had to get up and go and find the correct answer.

Then we went to the Market! Here we looked around at the many stalls and spoke to the stallholders about their produce.

On the way back we stopped at a pizza place and took some menus, which back in the classroom we used to help make our own pizzas (drawings of them anyway!). We also sang a fantastic song called “Je suis un pizza”.

THURSDAY

Today’s theme was “The town and shops”.

We leant shop names in French first, and then went into town to find the actual shops. It really helps children to remember if they see it in real life and can create a proper memory of it.

Back in the classroom the children had to guess what shops related to various cards. For example- “J’ai besoin de baguette” (I need a baguette) related to the boulangerie (bakery).

For the last hour we learnt body parts in French and the children had to draw a marmotte and label it’s body parts.

FRIDAY

On the final day the children revised everything they had learnt over the week by playing fun and active games related to the activities. There were shop role plays, board games, Simon Says, Pictionary and the “Je suis un pizza” song once again!

All in all it was a great week and the kids had learnt some really useful French by the end of it, as well as having a fabulous time meeting new friends and having fun.
