Stop your child spending too much time in front of the screen this summer

In this modern day and age, limiting screen time for children and teenagers (and adults!) is a constant battle!  No-one has any concrete figures on what impact the increased screen time will have on our children as this is a new generation who are experiencing technology in a way that we never have.

However, it has been proven that too much screen time has many negative effects:

  • Increased problems sleeping
  • Increased anxiety, attention problems and depression
  • Increased risk of gaining weight because of decreased physical activity
  • Decreased imagination and creativity as entertainment is constantly on-tap
  • Decreased brain development
  • Decreased social skills and awareness
  • Increase in negative, violent or inappropriate behaviour

We have taken the decision to limit smartphone, tablet and other gadget use during our summer camp.  This decision, which may be seen as controversial by the teenagers concerned (especially until they get used to it!), has been welcomed by parents on the whole.  Juniors attending the residential camp will have their gadgets, tablets and smartphones looked after by the camp leaders during their stay with us.  Usage will be limited to 1-1.5 hours per day in the late afternoon/early evening.  Juniors attending our day camp are asked not to bring smartphones with them.

This allows children the chance to really enjoy and benefit from the Summer Camp experience without distraction.  It allows our teachers and camp leaders to organise and run their activities with the full engagement of everyone involved. Most actually find that once they get used to this, it is a rewarding and liberating experience! And that 1 hour and a half per day is plenty of time to catch up with friends and family but after having spent a day out and about enjoying the mountains and improving their French with their new friends.
