There are many many French language courses available so how do you choose? A few tips from an insider in a French Language School…..!
Are you looking for a part-time French language course where you live that you will do in the evenings for example after work? In this case, you need to look at institutions or private language teachers in your local area to find a solution that will fit into your everyday life. Don’t be too ambitious about the number of hours you can study each week, it’s better to do a little each week and to progress slowly with good continuity than to do too much and realise you don’t have enough spare time to fit in a French language course with your other obligations and interests.
Or are you looking to take time off work or from your regular studies and the distractions of everyday life to concentrate on your French studies? If so, then the world is your oyster, or at least the French speaking world! It is important to choose somewhere to take a French course either in French or a French speaking country. Ideally you will not only study French during your French language course but you will also practise your French outside of the classroom, with French locals, with a host family, staff in the French language school or with other students
Your motivations and reasons for improving your French and your final goal should also be taken into consideration when choosing a French language course. If you need French for business situations, then you should look at French language schools specialising in business French. If you need to be able to read and write traditional and literary French, then look at traditional French language schools. If you want to be able to understand when French people talk to you and to be able to chat back to them, then you need to look for a more modren French language school with a more conversational approach.
This can also affect your choice of French language course. Of course you need to choose a course that is suitable for your level otherwise you won’t progress. But also, maybe ask the French language school about the levels of other learners, if there are suitable cultural activities for beginners if you have a lower level or if there are sufficient opportunities to practise your French if you are an advanced learner with specific business or other goals.
This is an important question because French is very often still taught in a very traditional way. If you don’t want to be sat in a classroom learning lists of vocabulary and verbs like you probably did at school, then you need to think about this when choosing your French language course. You can ask the French language school about their teaching methods to ensure they are suitable for your needs. This is especially important if you have any special learning needs such as dyslexia as you need to ensure that the French language school can offer you a suitable French language course.
