We all speak English and French!
Send an emailBook NowWhen we’re not all teaching or working at the school, we try and get out and about to do some of our favourite activities – this is why some of us came to the area after all! Everyone in the team has different things that they prefer doing but a few of us love road biking and love cycling in the local area: up and down mountains like the cyclists in the Tour de France (but nowhere near as fast!) and also exploring local villages in some of the less well travelled roads of the region.
A beautiful area for doing this is in the ‘Vallée Verte’ (the Green Valley). This is a scenic area of the Haute Savoie not far from Morzine. If you head from Morzine towards Thonon, go past the ‘Gorges du Diable’ (also well worth a visit!), then turn left through La Vernaz (pronounced ‘La Verne’). After this there are many lovely villages and different routes to explore passing through Vailly, Lullin, Megevette, Armoy and much more. The roads are quiet, the scenery and the chalets are stunning and you can wind your way through this valley on foot or on 2 wheels.
During our last bike ride in this area, we came across a really lovely and interesting idea at the foot of the ‘Col de Feu’ in a village called Orcier. There were some small pots of herbs that were for people to share and help themselves. In English we would call this an edible or communal garden. The idea is that people can take herbs for free to help to season their food. See the photo accompanying this blog for an idea of what this looks like!
We’re not sure if this idea exists in other villages or in other countries but we’d certainly like to try it in Morzine!

From 20–23 December, families can meet Santa at the Tourist Office square, share their wish lists, and enjoy the festive atmosphere with different time slots each day. On Christmas Eve, Santa makes…

Continue ReadingFrench Christmas Traditions Christmas festivities are very much in the heart of French culture. How we celebrate Christmas varies slightly, depending on the region and individual families. Anyhow, ‘Noël’ is most awaited by ‘les petits et les grands’ every year and probably most dreaded by parents because of the long…
