Many parents wonder about sending their children away on a Summer Camp, but they want to make sure that it’s going to be a positive experience and that their children are going to come away at the end of the camp having grown as a person and learnt from their experiences. So what do they actually learn from going on a French Summer Camp?
The obvious number one is language skills. However sometimes they learn more and in a different way than their parents expect. French Summer Camp lessons aren’t like French lessons at school. Our French classes are more focussed on communication, speaking and listening skills. We try to get students using the language in everyday situations, which is something that is complementary to the French that children learn at school. We offer GCSE, iGCSE, IB and A-level preparation courses as part of our French Summer Camp, however even these courses will be different from the exam preparation children do at school. We focus on exam tips and understanding what will be expected in the exams, building confidence and improving any weak points. Children also learn why it is useful and important to speak a 2nd language; often in school they don’t see the point in learning a 2nd language, but being in a multi-cultural context changes this outlook.
Following on from the last point, many children aren’t used to being in a multicultural environment. They learn a lot from this, their horizons are boradened and this is something that can never be taken away from them. They gain an understanding and a wider view of the world that is invaluable in this day and age.
Life in our French Summer Camp is different to childrens’ lives at home. They are in a different country, away from home, with different people and being looked after by people other than their parents. However, this is a chance for them to thrive and learn a lot about themselves and others. They will meet new people and make new friends, learn to trust new people, try new foods and new ways of life. Our team of activity leaders and our camp director are all highly trained and experienced in pastoral care. They are on hand from the moment the children arrive to the moment they leave, they live on-site to make sure that all of the children are happy and well looked after; they manage the students, ensure their day to day well-being and are always there to lend a sympathetic ear in case of any problems.
Part of everyday life in a French Summer Camp is learning to work and live as a team. Sharing a room, eating, studying, spending free time and sharing new experiences with other students teaches cooperation and team work in a way that just sharing school lessons with other students doesn’t back at home.
An essential part of our French Summer Camp is the amazing activities. From swimming and the stunning turquoise mountain-framed lakes to rafting down rapids and climbing to the top of mountains, our activity programmes are a sure way to experience new adventures, adrenalin and to enjoy the great outdoors! Every Saturday an excursion to a local town is arranged such as the 3rd oldest medieval village in France on the banks of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) where students can enjoy some shopping, swimming at the beach and cultural activities.
So the common theme running through all of the above is that students on our French Summer Camp get to try many many new things, new experiences and through this, children gain confidence in themselves and independence.
