Why you should learn a 2nd language

With a world where international clients are ten times more likely to so business with someone who speaks their language, it is becoming increasingly important to learn the language of your colleagues and clients. French is spoken in 29 countries, so although it isn’t the most widely spoken language in the world, it is certainly a valuable skill to be able to add this to your resumé!

Many people from many countries learn French as a 2nd language at school. Maybe not as effective as taking a French Intensive Course, this background knowledge of French certainly pays off when you return to study French as an adult. Even if you only studied 0-level or GCSE a long time ago, this basic understanding of the language goes a long way when you start a French Intensive Course as a student or as an adult. Understanding the language and the culture is a valuable first step in making progress to speak French fluently or at least being able to comfortably converse in French.

If you work or study in a country where French is spoken, people may speak your language whether that be English or another language, but they will generally feel more comfortable conversing in their mother tongue and will always appreciate the effort you are making to speak their language.

So now you have decided that it is worthwhile learning French or improving your French and taking a French course, where to start?

Well the quickest way to improve is to take a French Intensive Course or even a Super Intensive French Course and to take this in France where you can be immersed in French outside of the classroom as well as inside the French school you choose! A French Intensive Course can mean studying for anything from 3-6 hours per day, so you need to make sure you have the time and motivation to do this first of all. Some students take just one week on a French Intensive Course, maybe during a holiday from work. Some students take a career break with the sole objective of improving their French and study French for 1-6 months on a French Intensive Course. These are the students who really progress quickly, but for those of us for whom this isn’t a possibility, the important thing is to do as much as you can and to maximise every learning opportunity.

Most schools who offer a French Intensive Course make sure that learning is fun, interesting and varied to make sure that students enjoy their course and are truly involved in their learning! Usually you will find yourself in a class with students of different ages and different nationalities which keeps the class interesting and you can learn about the French language and culture but also about the languages and cultures of fellow students.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions about a French Intensive Course at Alpine French School!
