We all speak English and French!
Send an emailBook NowEveryone who is learning French or taking an Intensive French Course with us wants to progress and improve their French. A question we often get asked is “how much will I progress during a course with you?”. This is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string! There are many different factors to consider….
We set up a couple of tools on our website to help with some of our most common questions about how quickly people progress:
You can test your current French level with our online test:
Then, based on your current level, you can work out how long it would take you to become fluent by clicking here:
But maybe your aim isn’t necessarily to become fluent….at least not yet! The quickest way to progress is by trying to immerse yourself in French, with study and being surrounded by French. Our Intensive French Courses comprise of 15 hours of French lessons per week, 3 hours per day Monday to Friday. You can add private French lessons to this to make a Super Intensive French Course which also includes 1 hour of private tuition per day on top of the 15 hours of group tuition.
If you take a French Intensive Course and practice your French outside of the classroom, either with your host family, with teachers, French locals or other students then you really can notice a big progression in a short space of time. The CECR levels work as follows:
A1.1 Complete beginner
A1.2
A1.3
A2.1 Elementary
A2.2
A2.3
B1.1 Intermediate
B1.2
B1.3
B2.1 Upper Intermediate
B2.2
B2.3
You may be able to pass through the first couple of levels one week per level, especially if you have studied French before or have lived in France or have some previous knowledge of the language. However, once you get past the elementary level, you really need to expand your vocabulary, master French grammar and practice your speaking as much as possible to move up from one level to the next. How much effort you put in outside of the classroom plays a huge part in how quickly you will progress even on a French Intensive Course. Realistically even if you are the most effective student, you need to allow several weeks per level to truly assimilate the amount of information required and truly master the next level of the language.
