Top 10 things to do in Morzine in the summer when you’re not studying French

 

  1. Head up to the lake above the village of Montriond: Lac Montriond boasts an amazing backdrop, beautiful turquoise waters, picnic areas, sunbathing areas, walking trails and a couple of great restaurants! Well worth a visit.

 

  1. Take a cable car: Morzine and the Portes du Soleil ski area opens some of its ski-lifts during the summer to allow walkers and mountain bikers to access the higher mountain pastures. Hope on a chair-lift or into a cable-car which will transport you to the top of the mountain where you can walk, cycle or simply enjoy the views!

 

  1. Le Village des Chèvres: a traditional mountain village located above Lac Montriond, this village is home to mountain goats who roam around and wait for tourists to come and feed and pet them! There are some great hiking trails from this area and plenty of great restaurants, all serving local specialities some of which include goats’ cheese naturally!

 

  1. Lac Léman: Also known as Lake Geneva, the imposing Lac Léman is located just 30 minutes drive from Morzine. Enjoy sandy, stony and grassy beaches along the lake, fish restaurants, ports and beautiful little villages and towns including Yvoire, one of the oldest villages in France. Within its village walls, you will find many boutiques, creperies, ice-cream shops, a traditional port and some great restaurants.

 

  1. Annecy & its lake: just one hour’s drive from Morzine, the town of Annecy is a beautiful place for a day trip. Have a wander through the picturesque old town, do some shopping, take in the stunning lake and maybe even take out a pedalo and go for a swim in the turquoise waters.

 

  1. Hiking: Morzine is in the Chablais mountain range which offers endless options for hikers of all levels. Go out for an hour or a whole day, soak up the sunshine and the beautiful scenery and see the local wildlife, it you are lucky you might come across a marmotte and ibex!

 

  1. Canyoning: Morzine is known for its adventure sports and canyoning is a popular one of these. Slide, wade, jump and abseil your way down a river in a canyon for thrills galore!

 

  1. White Water Rafting: Morzine may not be by the sea but there are many watersports on offer. White water rafting is just one of these, but you can also try paddle-boarding and kayaking on Lac Montriond, water-skiing and wake-boarding on Lac Léman or Lac d’Annecy

 

  1. Mountain Biking or Road Biking: Morzine is a mecca for bikers and it is easy to see why. The mountain bike trails and parks are some of the best in the world and the mountain passes for road bikers are second to none with so many possible rides in the area that you will be spoilt for choice! And if you are here in July, maybe you’ll get to see the Tour de France too….

 

  1. Soak up the sun in a pavement café: if all of that sounds too energetic for you, you can simply relax in the mountain sunshine in one of Morzine’s many cafés, bars and restaurants, all of which have great sun terraces!
