So you’ve booked a trip to come to Morzine to study French and you are wondering what there is on offer during your free-time? Well luckily you have chosen the right place as Morzine is a great place during the winter season, well all year-round but we’ll start with the winter….
If you are a keen skiier or snowboarder, then the answer is simple. Morzine is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, the largest in Europe with 650km of pistes spanning France and Switzerland. From gentle, wide tree-lined slopes to challenging black runs, snow-cross areas, several amazing snow-parks and half-pipes there is something for everyone and you won’t get bored! Alpine French School is based in the heart of the action in the town centre of Morzine, clost to the ski-lifts so you can be on the slopes within minutes of leaving the classroom. Take advantage of your weekends by spending all day on the slopes to explore further afield. AFS can arrange lessons, ski-hire and ski-passes for you to make your trip run smoothly from start to finish.
The mountains surrounding Morzine offer an array of amazing mountain restaurants. On the slopes, at the top of cable-cars, nestled at the top of the mountains – choose from snack bars to traditional savoyard food all with great sun terraces for sunny days or cosy fires for when it’s snowing.
Join the crowds in one of the après-ski bars in Morzine. From DJ sets at the Tremplin including the famous Basscamp Festival with well-known DJs, live music from local bands and solo artists, Morzine is a vibrant fun place after you come off the slopes.
If you fancy a change from skiing/snowboarding, then give snowshoeing a go. We can arrange a local guide for you who will take you into the untouched snowfields, well off the beaten track for a magical mountain experience.
Morzine and the surrounding lakes and mountains offer many opportunities for cross-country skiing. Try out the trails around the breath-taking Lake Montriond for an unforgettable outing.
Take part in a snow-mobile outing on the mountain once the pistes close for the day. A guide will take you out in convoy with 2 people per snowmobile and you will learn the basics of driving a skidoo and zoom around the closed pistes!
Morzine offers a wide range of shops from traditional souvenir shops to modern snowboard shops offering the latest brands. Buy a whistling marmotte, some traditional cured meats, try the local Génépi (a mountain liqueur) or buy some new ski-wear. The magical town centre is a lovely place to wander around and meander in and out of the shops. Use this opportunity to speak French to the locals. Use our Friendly French Scheme to practice your French out of the classroom.
From traditional French cafés to wine bars and snack bars, Morzine has something for everyone. Sunny terraces are great for people-watching and enjoying a hot chocolate, or a mulled wine while snuggled into one of the seats lined with snuggly fur rugs.
Morzine is home to the Pingouins/Penguins Ice-Hockey team who play twice most weeks. A great way to get into the local spirit as the team have a strong local following and put on a great show whenever they play.
10. Swim/spa
Enjoy the new aquatic centre in Morzine with its modern indoor pool and spa facilities. A great place to relax and unwind after a day on the slopes or to do some serious swimming. Morzine also has several spas and beauty salons for those who fancy a bit of pampering!
The staff at Alpine French School will be happy to help you choose and organise suitable activities or tell you where to get the best coffee!
