👑 Galette des Rois: A Delicious January Tradition

January in France is synonymous with a beloved tradition: the Galette des Rois! This iconic pastry celebrates Epiphany, which takes place on January 6th, but in practice, we enjoy it all month long – with family, friends, at work, or even at sports clubs… basically wherever people want to share a joyful moment!

The galette is more than just a dessert: it’s a moment of sharing. Traditionally, it contains a fève (a small figurine) hidden inside. Whoever finds it becomes the king or queen of the day and gets to wear the paper crown that comes with the galette.

🎉 A Fun Serving Tradition

To make it fair and keep everyone guessing who will find the fève, the youngest person at the table hides under the table and calls out who should receive each slice. This playful custom ensures surprise and laughter for everyone!

🍴 Types of Galettes

Depending on the region, the galette can vary:

  • Frangipane Galette (the classic version): puff pastry filled with a mixture of butter, sugar, eggs, and almond powder.
  • Crowned Brioche (from southern France): brioche dough flavored with orange blossom water and decorated with candied fruits.

No matter the version, the joy of sharing a sweet moment with loved ones remains the same.

👩‍🍳 Recipe for Adventurous Cooks: Frangipane Galette

Ingredients for 6 people:

  • 2 sheets of puff pastr
  • 125 g ground almond
  • 100 g sugar
  • 125 g softened butter
  • 2 eggs + 1 egg for the glaze
  • 1 fève (or a small object to replace it) + 1 paper crown
  • 1 tablespoon rum or vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 220 °C (428 °F).
  2. In a bowl, mix the soft butter and sugar until smooth.
  3. Add the almond powder, 2 eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix well to form the frangipane.
  4. Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  5. Spread the frangipane in the center, leaving 2 cm free around the edges. Don’t forget to hide the fève!
  6. Cover with the second sheet of puff pastry and seal the edges with a fork.
  7. Beat the last egg and brush the surface to give it a golden color. You can also make patterns with a fork. Prick the pastry in a few places to prevent it from puffing up too much. .
  8. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let it cool slightly before serving… and get ready to crown the king or queen of the day! 👑

✨ Alpine French School Tip

Even if you’re in Morzine‑Avoriaz for skiing or French lessons, the Galette des Rois is a perfect opportunity to gather international friends around a French tradition. It’s also a great way to practice your foodie vocabulary and learn some typical expressions:

  • Tirer les rois → to draw lots to see who finds the fève
  • Couronner le roi/la reine → to crown the king/queen
  • Se régaler → to enjoy a treat

So, get your oven ready, hide the fève, and may the lucky one be crowned! 🥐✨
