The Tour de France comes to Morzine!

We are very excited that the infamous Tour de France is coming to Morzine this summer!

On Saturday 23rd July, the Tour de France will finish in Morzine after a mountain stage from Megève. This is the penultimate stage of the 2016 tour before the arrival in Paris along the Champs Elysées and it could be a deciding stage with many last-ditch attacks on the yellow jersey! A mountainous stage of 146km in length taking in the Col des Aravis, the Col de la Colombière, the Col de Ramaz et the Col de Joux Plane before finishing in Morzine.

This stage has also been chosen as the Etape du Tour where thousands of amateur cyclists will take to the roads and try to recreate a stage of the Tour de France, but probably a little slower than the real pros! This takes place on Sunday 10th July, a couple of weeks before the real thing.

The Tour de France first came to Morzine in 1975 and has come back 19 times since then. With it’s great location surrounded by several Cols/Mountain passes in the French Alps, it can be the starting or finishing point for many great routes. Morzine has seen many infamous cyclists win a stage such as Marco Pantani & Richard Virenque just to name a couple.

The whole of Morzine will come to life to support the Tour’s arrival. Supporters will arrive by the bus-load to see the wonderful spectacle that is the Tour de France. Roads are closed well in advance of the cyclists so it is important to find out about road closures. Even before the cyclists arrive, the buzz in the town will be magical. Then before the cyclists make their appearance, the publicity caravan will arrive distributing free gifts to the spectators. This lasts for about 45 minutes before the main event starts!
