Intensive French Course: the levels

So you want to take an Intensive French Course but you are worried about the level of the group. How do you know that the level will be right for you? What happens if you are placed in a class that isn’t the right level for you? These are common and very important questions that we frequently get asked by our students before they start an Intensive French Course with us.

Before you start an Intensive French Course, we evaluate your level. This means that before you arrive at Alpine French School, we already have a good idea of your level so that we can place you in a suitable group. When you book your course, you will be emailed a written evaluation to complete and you can also take the placement test on our website which is a multiple choice test. So now we have an idea of your written level and your level of grammar and understanding of the written language, what about your speaking and listening? What we usually do is to ask for a phone number that we can contact you on and then one of us just gives you a quick call. This only takes 5 minutes and ensures that you are booking an Intensive French Course that is the right level for you and therefore one that will make you learn and progress correctly, which after all, is what everyone wants!

However, if you start your Intensive French Course and it turns out that the group isn’t the right level for you, what should you do? The first thing is to talk to your teacher. He/she has been in the class with you so is the person with the best knowledge of your level and the level of the class. Please do not hesitate to do this though as we will move you to an alternative group if necessary. Don’t wait until the end of the week as then it is too late for us to help!

You will find below a little guide to the levels of classes that we offer….

How do I know my level?

Beginner:

You need to revise the basics such as introducing yourself, asking for things in shops but you also want to learn how to ask questions, use verbs in the present and say what you do on a regular basis and learn to make your own sentences.

Elementary:

You practise how to use most verbs in the present in more complex sentences and start looking at how to speak in the past.

Elementary Plus

You can speak in the present and the past but you want to develop your vocab and use more complex expressions to say things like ‘I got up’ or ‘ I get on well with my neighbour’ before moving on to other tenses

Lower intermediate

You can speak in the future, in the past and present but you want to learn more tenses to tell stories as you struggle to say things such as ‘he was running when I saw him..’ ‘I was watching telly whilst they were playing’..  and learn how to say  ‘he told me.. I saw her..’

Intermediate

You practise more subtle tenses which enable you to be more precise when talking about your life and also practise the intricacies of French language.
