How to get to Morzine

How to get to Morzine…

So you are thinking of visiting Morzine but you aren’t sure where Morzine is located or the best way to get here? Read on for more information…..

Morzine is located in Eastern France, near the Swiss and Italian borders. It is 1 hour from Geneva, 2.5 hours from Lyon and 30 minutes from Lake Geneva (or Lac Léman in French). Morzine is a mountain town, based in the French Alps and the local mountain range is called the Chablais. Morzine’s ski area is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area which is one of the largest ski areas in Europe with endless possibilities for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

Air

If you are looking to travel by plane, then the easiest way is to fly into Geneva airport and take a bus or transfer from there to Morzine. The journey time is 1 – 1.5 hours depending on the traffic and the road conditions. Transfer services and buses are readily available in the winter season (December to April) and the summer season (June – September). You can also fly into Lyon, Chambéry, Grenoble or even airports in the Italian Alps but transfer services are harder to find from these airports so it is best to hire a car if you choose one of these routes.

Road

If you are driving, then Morzine is only 30 minutes from the A40 motorway which links Geneva and Chamonix. If you are driving from Calais or northern France, you should allow approximately 8 hours and many people choose to break their journey in the wine region of Burgundy or the Champagne region for a pleasant overnight stop on the way.

Rail

The nearest station to Morzine is in Thonon-les-Bains which is 30 minutes from Morzine by road. You can take a train to Thonon (usually changing at Geneva or Bellegarde) and then get a taxi from Thonon to Morzine. Another option when travelling by rail is to arrive into Geneva and take a transfer as from the airport.

Morzine was originally a farming village and was quite remote. But the ski industry and related tourism changed all of this and from the 1950s, Morzine became a popular tourist destination. Access routes were added and improved along with the resort’s infrastructure and facilities which are continually being added to and extended.
