French Summer Camp for kids: what do they learn?

If you are thinking of sending your children to summer camp, then you might be wondering what the other advantages are of sending your children to a Summer Camp apart from learning French! French is an important part of our Summer Camp, we’re in France and people naturally want to learn French. But learning French in itself is just one thing that juniors take away from the camp.

French lessons at the Summer Camp take place every morning from 9h-12h30 but even during these lessons, juniors learn other skills than speaking French. They learn that they must ‘have a go’, ‘give it a go’ and this is very much the attitude of teachers during our Summer Camp. This is very different to the attitudes that juniors will come across in their own schools and one reason for this is that they are not assessed in any way at our Summer Camp. This is important as to learn a language, you need to be able to make mistakes! No-one is able to study and then open their mouth and speak perfectly. The traditional school environment encourages this culture of having to speak correctly and this inhibits people’s ability to communicate. And languages are about communication! This is a very important lesson that they juniors learn on the camp and as a result, they improve their communication skills and their confidence.

During the lessons and during activities, juniors work in pairs or groups with other students of different nationalities and different cultures. By working in group situations with other juniors who come from different backgrounds and maybe with different viewpoints, students learn valuable team building skills such as communication, listening to others, trusting others to do their part of the task, ensuring they do their own part and when this works, juniors will leave the task with a feeling of confidence and having achieved something. And if the task doesn’t work so well, they learn from that too!

Team building, working with others, international friendships and improved communication skills are valuable skills for education and life in general.
