French Summer Camp: a teacher’s view

You taught one of the GCSE preparation classes this at the TSC this summer.

  • What were your students like?

They were a mix of nationalities preparing for different exams. They were the normal teens profile haha!! And also active learners, fun and challenging!

  • Did you find it difficult to keep the lessons fun and active but also revise and teach the language the children needed for their GCSEs?

There was a brilliant group atmosphere so it helped me having them work as a team.

  • What sort of activities did you do in your classes?

We manage to revise tenses with songs they chose and practice speaking skills with sketches and theater activities. We also had a news of the day activity.

  • Do you think the children enjoyed the week?

Yes! I have photos and videos to prove it!! And they liked the fact that they were made to speak French at all times.

  • Why do you think it’s important for children to learn in an interactive way as opposed to a traditional classroom environment?

Well, firstly the kids are on holidays so if you want them to be on your side, you have to offer activities that they find of interest. I like to get them be involved as active learners rather than passive and engage their creativity, their spontaneity and also their sense of leadership.

  • Why do you think it’s good for children to learn another language?

Learning a language is very rewarding in many different ways and most of the time it’s instant reward and it gives them the opportunity to open up to other horizon wether cultural or intellectual.

  • What was the best part of your week?

The complicity there was in the group throughout the week!
