The French Alps is a truly outstanding region of France. Nestled in amongst the mountains are chalet-style villages, cute and picturesque with amazing views. Stunning scenery and great activities are 2 of the main attractions of the French Alps. But what is it like to take a French course or French lessons in the French Alps?
There are many things to consider when deciding to study in the French Alps. Do you want to study in a city in the valleys with the great mountain view? Or do you want to study really in the heart of the mountains? Do you want to be able to ski every day or just at weekends? Are you looking for a large-scale university offering French lessons or French courses, or are you looking for a smaller specialist language school?
There are some great cities on the outskirts of the French Alps. Grenoble is a great student city with amazing ski resorts to visit at the weekend only a 30-minute – 1h30 drive away. Chambéry and Annecy are smaller cities in the foothills of the French Alps with easy access to the mountains for weekend skiing.
Alternatively, if you are real ski or outdoors enthusiast, then you might want to think about studying in a school in a resort itself, with the ski slopes just minutes walk from the ski slopes and other mountain activities. At Alpine French School, we are based in the heart of Morzine and the school is just 2 minutes walk from the ski slopes and it is located right in the centre of the village just opposite the tourist office. Our students ski all morning and then start their French course in the heart of the French Alps in the afternoon with French lessons starting at 3pm to give students most of the day on the slopes. French lessons start at 2pm in the summer months leaving students all morning free for hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, watersports, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking or just enjoying the mountain air and the warm summer sun!
Learning French isn’t just about memorising grammar or vocabulary — it’s about immersing yourself in the language through stories, voices, culture, and everyday expressions. The best way to progress is to combine different types of input, such as reading, listening, watching, and engaging with short-form content. Variety is key: mix…
