Send an emailBook NowAs December rolls into the Chamonix Valley, the mountains dust themselves in snow, festive lights sparkle across the town, and the holiday spirit comes alive in a truly Alpine way. Whether you’re here for winter sports, family time, or just soaking in the Christmas atmosphere, Chamonix offers some magical moments. Here are two highlights — plus a few seasonal traditions you won’t want to miss.
One of the most charming things about December in Chamonix is the Christmas market in the town centre. Wooden chalets line the Place du Triangle de l’Amitié, selling all kinds of local crafts: handmade jewellery, soaps, regional products — plus delicious treats, vin chaud and crepes. It’s the perfect place to browse for gifts or souvenirs, or simply hang out with friends and family in a joyful, festive environment. The market typically runs from mid-December through to New Year’s, with daily opening hours around 11:30 – 19:00.
Christmas in Chamonix is about much more than shopping — it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and a sprinkle of Alpine magic. In the week leading up to Christmas, the town comes alive with twinkling lights, live music, and festive entertainment. Around the last day of the school term, a parade winds through the streets, with Père Noël walking alongside local schoolchildren, spreading holiday cheer. Visitors can also join in a variety of workshops, while music lovers can enjoy one of the many concerts held throughout the valley. Perhaps the most enchanting moment of all is on Christmas Eve, when Santa makes a special stop in Chamonix. The town fills with music, carols, and a warm, festive atmosphere, and many local restaurants serve a traditional French Christmas Eve dinner.
Night Ski Descents: Ski schools often organise torchlit descents down the slopes — a beautiful and atmospheric way to celebrate the season.
Ice Hockey Gala Match: On December 23, the local ice hockey team (Les Pionniers / Chamois) plays a gala match at the Patinoire Richard Bozon.
Guided Christmas Train Ride: On December 27 & 28, you can take the Montenvers train up to Mer de Glace for a festive ride: there’s a treasure hunt, balloon sculpture workshops, magic, Christmas cards and a chance to meet Father Christmas — all included in the ticket.
Christmas Market in Vallorcine: If you’re willing to venture a little outside Chamonix, Vallorcine hosts its own Christmas market, complete with artisan stalls, local food, and a visit from Santa
In the end, December in Chamonix offers something truly special. Its festive atmosphere feels authentic and intimate — far from the huge commercial Christmas markets — with local artisans, real community spirit, and the mountains providing a naturally magical backdrop. Add to this a wide range of family-friendly events, from parades and workshops to concerts and enchanting train rides, and there’s plenty to delight visitors of all ages. Combined with the valley’s winter charm, quieter slopes, and endless outdoor possibilities, Chamonix in December is the perfect blend of celebration and adventure — a place where Christmas magic meets Alpine beauty.
