Looking to learn French in France and train for a triathlon at the same time? Then Morzine is the perfect location! Home to many triathletes, Morzine boasts great sporting facilities and an outstanding natural environment for training in all 3 disciplines.
Choose to swim in the beautiful 50m outdoor pool, head inside to the new 25m pool, or select one of the many local lakes to practise your open water swimming. As soon as the winter draws to a close, the cyclists venture back out onto the Alpine roads, choosing from shorter rides through the local villages interspersed with shorter hill climbs to build strength or longer rides over the great mountain cols. Morzine has an abundance of stunning trails for running allowing you to pack in the miles in the forest and mountain trails. Choose from flat or slightly undulating routes or true hill running.
Many world-class triathletes choose to train in Morzine and many triathlon coaches use it as a destination for triathlon camps. Amongst these is Australian Amelia Pearson who is also a student at Alpine French School.
How and when did you come to visit Morzine for the first time?
I first came to Morzine in 2005 when racing for Cesson Sevinge in the French Triathlon Grand Prix. A few of the triathletes in the team wanted to train in the mountains in preparation for the Embrum Triathlon. I joined them and had a fantastic week of training.
What made you decide to stay here and live in Morzine on a permanent basis?
After retiring from professional racing my husband and I wanted to still do something based around triathlon. I had also spent some time training in Vevey and so knew that we loved this part of the world and knew it was a great area for training. We returned in 2012 to start hosting Triathlon & Cycling holidays.
What is your favourite place to train in Morzine?
I love swimming and running at Lac Montriond. The surrounding are just so beautiful. My favourite ride is down to Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval through Samoëns and then back over the Col de Joux Plane.
Do you work as well as train?
I run Tri4theAlps hosting triathlon and cycling holidays. I don’t train much for myself anymore, but join in with our guests as I lead the sessions. I did some local events last year, and had really forgotten how much fun it is to race!
What tips do you have for aspiring triathletes?
Get out there and have a go. Triathlon is all about training consistently to build experience in the 3 disciplines. At a race don’t worry about the other people around you, focus on yourself and getting from the start to the finish line the best you can. I have an article in the winter SOURCE magazine where you can read about preparing for your first triathlon in just 6 weeks.
