Grammar for Dummies: Can

1) CAN : la structure

French people use the verb « pouvoir » in the present tense to express the idea behind « CAN ».

In a positive sentence

Je peux courir 10km

Tu peux parler espagnol

Il/elle/on peut faire la cuisine

Nous pouvons comprendre le chinois

Vous pouvez courir 10km

Ils/elles peuvent parler espagnol

Notice that we are using TWO verbs. The first verb gets changed, NOT the second one.

In a negative sentence

Je ne peux pas courir 10km

Tu ne peux pas parler espagnol

Il/elle/on ne peut pas faire la cuisine

Nous ne pouvons pas courir 10km

Vous ne pouvez pas parler espagnol

Ils/elles ne peuvent pas comprendre le chinois

Notice that the first verb on top of being changed, gets the negation.

In a question

EST-CE QUE:

…..tu peux acheter des pommes de terre s’il vous plait?

…..vous pouvez me dire à quelle ouvre la piscine s’il vous plait?

…..tu peux aller chercher les enfants à l’école s’il te plait ?

…..vous pouvez appeler les pompiers s’il vous plait ?

2) When do we use it ?

« CAN » can express something you are allowed to do, or not allowed to but also can express what you can or can’t do (a capacity or incapacity).

A permission :

Je peux prendre un goûter.

Mes enfants peuvent jouer dehors jusqu’à 18h.

Son chien peut dormir sur le canapé.

A prohibition :

Vous ne pouvez pas vous garer ici.

Tu ne peux pas aller à la fête de tes amis.

Elle ne peut pas sortir ce week end.

A capacity to do something :

Mon chat peut dormir pendant des journées entières.

Pierre peut jouer du piano comme un dieu.

Sarah et Charles peuvent parler quatre langues étrangères.

An incapacity to do something :

Il ne peut pas faire deux choses en même temps.

Nous ne pouvons pas conduire sur la neige.

Elle ne peut pas parler chinois.
