Morzine-Avoriaz Opening Weekend

Are you thinking about booking a ski/snowboard holiday to the French Alps? Are you keenly watching the snowfall, the snow forecast and the webcams to see what the snow is like? In the past, we used to book a ski holiday and have no way of checking if there would be snow or not when we arrived. We just used to trust mother nature to provide the snow that we saw in the marketing images. However, nowadays things are very different. With social media, photo sharing apps, webcams and the internet in general, we have become much more demanding in so many ways. One of which being wanting our ski holiday to be snow-sure and being able to check out the current situation in our chosen ski resort hourly!

The problem is that snowfall isn’t so predictable as we might like. Temperatures go up and down, low and high pressure systems come and go and snow doesn’t always fall when we would like! Typically in the French Alps, snow falls between October and May and the ski season is from December until April. It doesn’t take many snowy episodes to provide quite a lot of snow on the pistes and on top of this, there are many man-made snow making facilities in most ski-resorts nowadays to cater for the unpredictable snow and the more demanding clientèle!

This year is a typical year when people are keenly watching the snowfall in the Alps to decide if and when they might book their ski holiday. We had a lot of snow fall in early November and everyone thought that the season was off to a great start. And they were right. There hasn’t been a lot of snow since, but there has been some snowmaking going on and as a result Morzine-Avoriaz opened its pistes this weekend for the winter. A large part of the Avoriaz area opened so we thought we’d head up and check it out. We got a pleasant surprise! The on-piste snow conditions weren’t bad at all as you can see from the photo above. A great weekend was had by all!
