Summer is upon us, the school year is drawing to a close, exams are in progress (or already finished for the lucky ones) and thoughts are drawing to the summer holidays and next year already! Some are looking forward to time off to relax after a hard year studying, some are seeking new adventure, some are looking to improve certain skills or achieve accreditations before the next academic year starts. For many, the summer holidays provide a chance to work on things that you don’t have time for during the academic year.
Many of our students who attend our French Language Summer Camp are looking to improve their French skills with some fun but intensive study during the summer break so that they start back at school in September with a boost and new motivation. The main aim of our French Language Summer Camp is to put the language into context and motivate our young learners to speak French and to want to learn French. Usually if we are motivated to learn something and see the purpose in doing so, and enjoy it, then the learning process becomes easier but also more enjoyable!
Our different types of French Language Summer Camp allow young learners to dip in a little bit by trying just our morning lessons if they are visiting the area with their family. Or some also take advantage of the French Alps to try some great activities in French in the afternoons. And some want the full immersion experience and therefore decide to try our Residential French Language Summer Camp often for several weeks!
With a great team of experienced activity leaders and native-speaker teachers, students are well looked after and have the opportunity to use French throughout the day at the French Language Summer Camp: at mealtimes, they can help with the service and learn the words for all the different parts of the kitchen, utensils, cutlery…then they can enjoy trying out their French conversation over their meal. Juniors have fun speaking French during games and fun activities in their lessons, then they head out to use French in real life situations out and about in town and on their activities.
A testimonial from our French Language Summer Camp last year sums it up….
“Alessandra had had French classes at school for a couple of years. After two years they were still teaching basic words like greetings, colours, numbers. They said they couldn’t start teaching sentences until they children were 10 / 11 years old. She was not enjoying it at all and really didn’t see the point. So, she couldn’t be bothered and didn’t do well. The school told us the reason for her poor performance was that she clearly had no memory for language and would struggle to learn another language. They said they had tried but there was really nothing they could do about her lack of memory! Not a great conversation. However, I wasn’t prepared to write off her ability to learn another language at age 8. So, I sent her out to Alpine French School. And we made a very big decision over the summer holidays to change her school here in the UK. This year, the French teacher in her new school says she is very enthusiastic in class. She hasn’t scored less than 85% in her French tests since she joined and has even had a Commendation from the Headmaster for consistently scoring 100% in her weekly French vocabulary tests. Unquestionably she sees it as more fun learning French after having experienced actually using French in real life settings when at your school. Nearly a year later, she is still talking about being able to go to the local market and buy nougat in French! She asked me yesterday if she’ll be able to do that again this year.”
