In some cultures, sending children to a Summer Camp is the norm and has been for a long time. For others, it is a new idea so parents question the benefits and what they are letting themselves and their children in for!
Some parents don’t like the idea of not spending time with their children, they like them to feel secure in the family unit during holiday time and don’t want them to feel like they are being sent away. Parents miss their children when they are away and need to make sure they are making the right choice. However part of children growing up is letting them spreading their wings so they can grow as a person through their experiences.
Children themselves often don’t like the idea of being away from the familiar, but if we always let children do what is familiar to them, they would never do anything new! They often don’t want to say goodbye to their parents on arrival day, but a couple of days into camp and they don’t want to leave – like many an experience your children have probably had before when they started school or various clubs. They may experience moments of homesickness, but this is part of getting used to being away from home and a Summer Camp is a great way to do this for a short length of time!
Our French Summer Camp is managed by a fully qualified and experienced Camp Director; the profession is highly regulated in France, so all of our activity leaders are also qualified and experienced and not just students looking for a summer job. Part of their role in our French Summer Camp is for them to provide pastoral care for the children on the camp. This is something they are well trained in and provide a safe environment for them to flourish, they encourage independence and maturity, let them make their own decisions but are there to lend an ear if they have a problem or if they want a chat. They also maintain order in the French Summer Camp and ensure that there is a good ambiance between all of the campers, teachers and activity leaders.
One memorable thing about our French Summer Camp that gets mentioned in our campers’ end of stay reports is the friends they make during their time on the camp. We get campers from a wide variety of different nationalities bringing with them different outlooks and this creates an interesting environment for campers. They mix with people from different cultures, of the same age as themselves and also with younger and older campers. This means that they make new friends and experience meeting people that open their horizons.
French Summer Camp is one place where campers can truly be themselves. Free from pre-conceived ideas from teachers, parents, peers, friends, campers can be the person they want to be. Starting on the first day with a clean slate does a teenager a world of good!
