We get many students or potential students asking what Morzine is like in the summer. A good testimonial to how great it is is that many of the expats who live in the area came for the skiing or snowboarding but end up loving the summer even more than the winter! So why is Morzine so great in the summer…..?
The weather
Most people associate ski resorts with snow and cold, but summer in the Alps is the complete opposite! Bright blue skies and warm temperatures mean that Morzine is a great place to enjoy the summer sun.
Activities
Morzine hosts a wealth of outdoor activities in the summer. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you will find plenty to keep you entertained. The Portes du Soleil ski area opens over 20 of its ski-lifts in the summer and these are transformed to carry mountain bikers and hikers enabling you to enjoy the high mountain pastures and incredible views.
Mountain bikers come to Morzine as it is the European mecca of mountain biking. Downhill mountain bikers can enjoy the steep, technical descents after taking a ski-lift up; maximum enjoyment and minimum pedalling!
If you are into freeriding, there are purpose built freeride, north shore and dirt jump areas with plenty of rooty dropoffs, jumps and rock drops to be discovered off the beaten track.
Cross-country mountain bikers can explore many kilometres of trails including forest sections, tech rocky switch-backs, fast flowing singletrack, exposed high Alpine routes, though to gentle cross country journeys in stunning Alpine valleys.
Road biking
Enjoy stunning alpine scenery and a great variety of cycling routes. This isn’t a one-road Alpine town and Morzine is ideally placed to offer a huge number of road biking routes for all levels. There are manyTour de France climbs in the immediate vicinity; Col de Joux Plane, Col de la Ramaz, Col De Joux Verte (Avoriaz) are all within 2-3 hours riding distance. A little further afield the Col de la Colombière and Col de Romme are within 4 hours riding and only a little further, the Col des Saisies.
Hiking
Explore the mountains during the day, either in organised groups or alone with a local map. Morzine is located in the Chablais Mountain Range, close to the Swiss Border. Choose from an endless range of mountain walks from gentle rambles enjoying the local flora and fauna or scale the highest peaks of the area and enjoy the spectacular views. Hiking in Morzine is a truly stunning experience.
Climbing & Via Ferrata
Morzine is located in the Chablais Mountain Range, close to the Swiss Border, Chamonix and Lake Geneva. There are many places to go climbing or bouldering in Morzine and the surrounding area. Choose to climb with a group, a private guide or organise your own climbing. Mix it up with via-ferrata and canyoning to broaden your climbing abilities and discover new areas of the mountains.

The town
Morzine is a bustling mountain town: colourful flowers line the chalet balconies, mountains frame the town and bright blue skies top off the views. Add in pavement cafés, mountain pastures, traditional mountain chalets, cows grazing amongst the wild-flowers and you find yourself in a mountain paradise. If all of the activities sound a bit energetic for you, then Morzine offers a great selection of shops and spas, or just try relaxing by the amazing outdoor pool or one of the beautiful mountain lakes.
