Questions To Ask A French Summer Camp before booking

Before booking a French Summer Camp, you will have a lot of contact with the booking office for that camp. It is easy for a camp to have a glossy brochure, but it is important to look at the smaller details, ask questions particular to your child. How your queries are handled and the contact you have are a good gauge of how the camp is operated, the camp philiosophy and the human qualities behind it.

What is the camp’s philosophy and what is the emphasis on?

Every Summer Camp was set up with its own objectives and philosophy. At Alpine French School, our Camp was created to give young people the opportunity to improve their French language skills and experience some great activities in a wonderful setting.

What is the camp director’s background?

The Summer Camp was set up by Alpine French School Directors Helen Watts, Christelle Thorel and Déborah Maire. Offering a range of experience in schools, Summer Camps and Activity Programmes, they put together a programme that combines a great mix of fun and learning. 2 of them being mothers themselves, they take the organisation of the camp and the well-being of the Camp very seriously as they understand that other parents are entrusting their children to them. The Summer Camp also has a Director who lives onsite who is fully qualified and experienced in the French system.

What training do French Summer camp leaders receive?

Camp Leaders in France must have a qualification called the BAFA or be working towards this. This involves training in safety regulations, emergency procedures and communication, behaviour management techniques, child abuse prevention, appropriate staff and camper behavior, and specific procedures for supervision.

What is the leader to camper ratio?

French Summer Camps are strictly regulated and the minimum ratio from Summer Camp leaders to Campers is 1 :12. We base our calculations on at least 1 :8 to ensure that campers are well-looked after at all times.

What are the ages of the Camp Leaders?

The camp leaders at our Summer Camp are all at least 18 years old. We aim for a slightly higher average age and leaders who speak several languages.

What about references?

Alpine French School is happy to put parents who enquire in touch with parents whose children have previously attended the summer camp for personal references.
