What kind of things do children do in their French Summer Camp lessons?

Most of the parents who book their children into our French Summer Camp do so with the main objective of improving their child’s French. No matter which of our French Summer Camp programmes you choose, the part that all children participate in is the morning French language lessons.

French Language Lessons at our French Summer Camp take place every morning from 9h-12h30 (with a half-hour break) Monday to Friday. This means that students get 15 hours of French language lessons each week which is a great way to give their French a boost during the school holidays.

Students are split into several groups according to their age and their level of French. We have several groups running each week of the French Summer Camp. On our application forms, we ask parents to give us details of their children’s level of French to enable us to divide our students into groups before their arrival. Then on the first morning of the Summer Camp, our teachers carry out an informal assessment activity to ensure that all students have been placed in a group of the correct level and students are moved to an alternative group if necessary.

The idea of the French Summer Camp language lessons is that they are fun yet educational and focus on oral communication skills. Often at school, children do a lot of reading, writing, grammar and learning vocabulary but they don’t get much chance to put it into practice. Our teachers use games, projects, songs, questionnaires, trips out into Morzine (for example to the market) to get students speaking French outside of the classroom.

Some students are enroled on to our French Summer Camp with specific exam preparation in mind, for example for French GCSE or French AS or A level. We have separate groups for these students which focus more on exam objectives and skills for those looking for more focussed study.

One thing that the majority of our students leave the camp with is renewed (or new!) motivation to learn French. They understand why it can be useful and fun to speak a foreign language and it makes them see the point of their French lessons at school. Previously, many see French as an abstract subject and don’t really see the use of what they are learning. With everything, if children are keen to learn, interested and motivated, then they will learn much better!
