How to help your child with their French GCSE: French Summer Camp

Do you look back at your childhood experience of language learning and with hindsight wish that you had paid more attention? So many of us adults talk with regret about studying French at school, I wish I’d tried harder, paid more attention, I wish I’d seen the point in studying French and known how useful it would be and I would have tried harder. And that is the key point really for most of us…..we didn’t see the point in studying French, so we didn’t try very hard or pay much attention.

Most children are quite capable of doing something they put their mind to. However learning French and other languages is often a somewhat abstract idea for a child or teenager. Even if they may have visited France and ordered a baguette or a croissant from time to time, unless they really understand what benefit could be gained by trying harder in their French lessons then often they don’t really care and don’t put their heart into it. Of course, there are the lucky ones who find languages easy, or school in general easy.

However everyone is capable of learning a language, we all learnt our own. But what is often lacking in our younger years is the motivation. And learning anything as an adult is harder! Our brains aren’t made to absorb things when we are older the way we do when we are younger….

So how do you get your children to see the point in learning French? Well one way is to get them to France as much as possible, get them in contact with French people. But not just the shop assistant in the ‘boulangerie’, young people that they can relate to, people that they really want to speak to. Our French Summer Camp provides an invaluable opportunity for young people to learn French in a completely different context to their French lessons at school. Students get the chance to meet French students, spend time with real French people on a daily basis, to spend time with cool French activity leaders and teenagers who they find themselves wanting to converse with. So suddenly the French classes they take every morning as part of our French Summer Camp are not only about learning some French vocab that seems irrelevant or doing some GCSE preparation, but about learning to really communicate in French. And once that door and that part of their brain has been opened, then it will never close again and their French studies will really take-off!
