Where to go on day trips from Morzine

Morzine is full of great things to do for the whole family, but if you want to venture a little further afield when you have some down time from your French course, below is your essential guide to road tripping in the area. All of these destinations are easy to visit in one day, without staying over. Maximum drive time is 1 hour 30 minutes from Morzine.

Chamonix

It goes without saying, ‘Cham’ as it’s known to the locals, is the European mecca of mountaineering, and for good reason. The Mont Blanc massif is an incredible sight, even if the closest you’ll get to the summit of this incredible mountain, is from the comfort of your chair on an Easyjet flight to Geneva. Go to Chamonix if you want good restaurants and shops, great atmosphere, lively nightlife and incredible scenery. If you want to get up close and personal with Mont Blanc, take the Aiguille du midi cable car which takes you to height of 3,842m for impressive panoramic views. Chamonix is only a one hour drive from Morzine. Annecy

If you want to see a typically French town with plenty of charm and beauty, head to Annecy which is around 1 hour and 15 minutes dive from Morzine. This beautiful town is nestled on the side of a stunning lake, great for walks or for a boat trip out on the water. If you head to Annecy in the summer, make sure you try the water activities such as swimming, sailing, water-skiing or diving. You will be spoilt for choice with good restaurants and nice shops which are scattered around the old town. For all things Annecy check out the tourist office websiteClick here for directions.

Samoëns

We love Morzine, of course, but neighbouring Samoëns (40 minutes drive) is quite simply one of the most beautiful villages in the Alps. In the summer you can drive over the Col de Joux Plane (which is a stunning place) and then drop over the other side and enjoy incredible views as you descend into the vallée du Giffre. Check out the local markets which are on all year round, soak up the charming atmosphere and practise your French with the friendly locals. If you have time, head to the Cirque du Fer a Cheval at the end of the valley. This natural amphitheatre will take your breath away. Click here for directions to Samoëns.

Megeve

If you like glitz and glamour, check out Megeve. This chic resort is full of designer shops, great bars and restaurants. In the summer, as well as the usual alpine activities like biking, hiking and exploring the mountains, you can also play golf, tennis and swim in the large outdoor pool. For the winter, take a hot air balloon ride, go snow shoeing, or dog sledding. Megève is also home to one of the world’s best spas, Les Fermes de Marie. Drive time from Morzine is just over 1 hour. Click here for directions.

Evian les Bains

You’ve most likely hydrated yourself with the water before, now it’s time to visit the source! Evian is situated on the edge of Lake Geneva (or Lac Léman). Head here for picnics at the lakeside, interesting architecture and a great golf course (closed for winter from November to February). This 18-hole championship course (6,595 yards, par 72) is one of the most beautiful in Europe, and offers magnificent views over the lake and mountains. Virtual Tourist gives details on 19 things to do in Evian here. It should take around 45 minutes to drive to Evian from Morzine. Click here for directions.
